Geography PW-Volcanic Eruptions in Italy


Mount Etna(One of the world's top volcanoes)

-When did the event happen: 2002
-Where did it happen: Sicily,Italy
-What was the impact & the extent of damage caused as a result of the event?:
The eruption that occurred on the flanks threw up a huge amount of ash that could easily be seen from space and fell as far away as
Libya, 600 km south across the Mediterranean Sea. This eruption caused the eastern flanks of the volcano to slip by up to two metres, and many houses on the flanks of the volcano experienced structural damage. The eruption also completely destroyed the tourist station Piano De Lagoon,which is on the northeastern flank of the volcano, and part of the tourist station "Etna Sud" around the Rifugio Sapienza on the south flank. An earthquake accompanying the eruption of Mount Etna has forced 1000 people from their homes.
-What did the government do in respose to the event?:
The Italian Government is meeting on Tuesday night to discuss demands by regional officials for a state of "natural disaster" to be declared.
